This course examines the development, traditions, perspectives, and debates in Philippine historiography from the colonial period to the present, with emphasis on how, why, and by whom Philippine history has been written and interpreted. It critically explores major historiographical perspectives, including colonial and Eurocentric interpretations, nationalist and Filipino-centered approaches, Pantayong Pananaw, postcolonial critiques, social history, history from below, and grassroots and rural historiography. Particular attention is given to the shift from Manila-centered and elite-oriented narratives toward more inclusive histories of ordinary Filipinos, local communities, indigenous peoples, workers, women, and other historically marginalized groups. Through close reading, seminar discussions, source criticism, and research activities, students analyze the assumptions, methodologies, perspectives, and limitations of various interpretations of Philippine history and reflect on how Philippine history should be studied and written in the twenty-first century.
