Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

this chapter considers the nervous system as one of the body's two major regulatory systems. The chapter emphasizes the important role of the nervous system in maintaining homeostasis by detecting, interpreting, and responding to changes in internal and external conditions. The chapter considers the cells of the nervous system, the functions of cells, and organization of the nervous system. Action potentials, action potential propagation, synapses, and reflexes are discussed. The parts of the brain and spinal cord and the functions performed by each part are considered, and the chapter also discusses the peripheral nervous system, including the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and plexuses. The autonomic nervous system and its functions are presented. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the effects aging has upon the nervous system.
