This course equips the pre-service English teachers with an understanding between and among the four types of grammar: functional, descriptive, prescriptive and pedagogic. The course also provides an avenue to carry out analysis on the role of grammar in achieving communicative competence. It allows them to demonstrate linguistic proficiency as an important factor in promoting their students’ literacy skills and to apply teaching strategies that are responsive to their students’ linguistic backgrounds considering the principles of formative and summative assessments.

This course allows the pre-service English teachers to explore the nature of the macro skills and the theoretical bases, principles, and methods and strategies in teaching and assessing listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing. It aims to provide various strategies for pre-lesson, during lesson, and post-lesson to develop research-based knowledge and principles in teaching the macro skills while using differentiated teaching to suit learners’ gender, needs, strengths, interests, and experiences. Also, they will be able to identify learning outcomes aligned with the learning competencies and provide timely, accurate, and constructive feedback to improve learners’ performance in the macro skills.

Course Description:
This course will emphasize English as a second language with main focus on language teaching methodologies to improve knowledge on the structure and fluency in the English language, and literacy skills, through listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing. It consists of content-based lessons that will enhance the students’ skills along application of various teaching strategies in teaching English, the use of ICT to facilitate the teaching learning process and selecting, designing and organization of appropriate assessment strategies. Demonstrating knowledge and skills on content and pedagogy through lesson presentations is an important highlight of this course.

The course aims to equip the prospective teachers with the necessary pedagogical content knowledge for the teaching of basic contents in mathematics in the intermediate grades. Understanding and appreciation of key concepts and skills involving numbers and number (whole numbers, number theory, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, percent and integers); measurement (time, speed, perimeter, circumference and area of plane figures, volume and surface area of solid/ space figures, temperature and meter reading); geometry (parallel and perpendicular lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles and solid figures); patterns and algebra (continuous and repeating patterns, number sentences, sequences and simple equations); statistics and probability (bar graphs, line graphs and pie graphs, simple experiment and experimental probability) as applied using appropriate technology in critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, communicating, making connections, representations and decisions in real life. Various principles and appropriate teaching approaches, methods and techniques associated with Mathematics Instruction towards assuming responsibility for independent learning will be emphasized.

The course is a principled approach to the teaching of English grammar using both the descriptivist and the prescriptivist points of view in describing and explaining linguistics phenomena, including the changes happening in the English language in the 20th century. Students are expected to analyze the grammatical structures of texts and to explore research-based theories, approaches, methods, and strategies and utilize them in the teaching of grammar. Hence, they will design grammar lessons and conduct demonstration teaching of grammar lessons assigned to them.
