This course covers the nature, notions, theories and principles related to reading and writing and the application of such theories/principles to reading and writing and to the teaching of reading and writing. It is aimed at acquainting or re-orienting teachers, reading practitioners and educators with the important aspects of reading and writing instruction and at presenting much practical information or research-based information about the process of teaching reading and writing to affirm or redirect existing practices of language teachers who are expected to be equipped with knowledge, principles and skills that enable them to adapt/develop strategies to ensure optimum development of their students’ reading and writing skills.

The course deals with the phenomena of World Englishes as a recent development in the field of linguistics. It covers the underlying theories and development of varieties of Englishes all over the world. It also includes analysis and evaluation of readings on World Englishes as well as the nativized English in the Philippines used in any of the following controlling domains: education, media, politics, business. The students are expected to conduct research on aspect of Philippine English as a way of contributing to the existing literature of Philippine English as a legitimate variety of English.
