Studies reveal that Philippine Society is pluralistic and many ethno-linguistic groups struggle to keep their identity and sustain themselves to continue thriving in a globalized and highly technical world. This course is thus an attempt to study these societies cross-culturally, with a focus on the dynamics of change in different groupings and the application of theoretical principles to a diverse selection of particular cases. It also examines cultural similarities and differences among human societies around the world. Special topics focus on basic anthropological and historical questions and issues regarding culture and humankind. The presentation of lessons is such that students will realize and appreciate that society is seen as categories which are but one way of seeing people’s worlds, of how they organize their lives and articulate their values. This is also with the view that knowledge learned will equip the Social Studies teacher with open-mindedness towards socio-cultural differences and the promotion of sensitivity and cultural relativism. Critical thinking and writing skills are also emphasized.
