The modules for Christian Faith Education (CFE) 102, Christian Morality in our Times, follow the SEE - DISCERN - ACT method that was introduced by Joseph Cardinal Cardijn in Europe. In these modules, as in other Religious Education workbooks of CICM schools, the method is renamed as CONTEXT - INSPIRED WORD OF GOD – CHURCH TEACHING – MISSIONARY RESPONSE (C-I-C-M) method. The Context introduces you to a better knowledge of your present situation and is the equivalent of Engage in this module. The Inspired Word of God provides a reading from the Sacred Scriptures that is relevant to the topic. The Church Teaching presents a well-selected excerpt from the riches of the Catholic Church’s document that supports the Bible text. The reading of both the Inspired Word of God and the Church Teaching are equivalent to Explore while the discussions about these are equivalent to Explain and Elaborate in this module. The Missionary Response provides you with an activity wherein you apply the lesson in your actual life situation as a way to evaluate your learning. This is equivalent to Evaluate in this module.
This institutional course is to be taken by all students across all programs regardless of religious faiths and affiliations. Further, this is to be taken by all students in all CICM higher education institutions. For Catholics, this course will enhance your understanding
of our own faith/doctrine, our moral laws, and our rituals and celebrations (prayer and liturgy) that have been parts of our day-to-day lives. For non-Catholics, this is an invitation for you to reflect on the richness of the Catholic tradition, which will eventually lead you to a better appreciation of your own religious traditions.

The course introduces the students to the main themes of Christian Morality. It searches more deeply, in the light of Christian faith, for the meaning in God’s design for humankind and creation of the plurality or moral issues and concerns with which we (humankind/Christians) are surrounded most especially in the contemporary time.
Christian Morality asks what life is and seeks, in the light of Christian faith, to interpret the basic goal or direction of humankind. It studies the relationship between revelation and faith, grace and sin and faith and salvation. Christian Morality studies the various paradigm-shifts in the context of the history of salvation and in their relationship to the mystery of Jesus Christ and the Christian Church.

CFE 102: Christian Morality in Our Times is a core Christian Faith Education subject offered in CICM higher education institutions. The course focuses on the principles of Christian morality, human dignity, freedom, conscience, virtues, and social responsibility in the light of the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. It helps students understand and respond to modern moral issues affecting individuals, families, society, and the environment through faith-guided decision-making and authentic Christian living. The subject also encourages students to develop compassion, justice, integrity, and active participation in building a moral and humane society.

As early as the first Gospel written, the question associated with Jesus is “Who do you say I am?” This question has produced a variety of answers ever since, not to mention books in our own times evaluating Jesus philosophically, theologically, or biblically, among others. This course does not focus on the details of some technical debates among reputable biblical scholars and systematic theologians. Rather, it tries to address some contemporary issues and problems of religious educators and religious workers or pastoral workers or as to the beginners in doing the theology of inculturation. Aside from imparting knowledge in the theological process of doing Christology, this course aims at deep formation that would shape the spiritual life of Christian believers. Through this course, the student is guided into a systematic, and a more mature encounter and experience in making the identity of Christ more relevant and meaningful in one’s life. It tries to help the student to appreciate the basic insight as to why the lives of so many people have been inspired by the belief that Jesus of history and the Christ of Faith. The course strengthens the universality of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth to all cultures. This universality can be perceived and validated in particularity through localized experiences and cultural presuppositions. Jesus story is crucial to Christianity. Thus, it must to continue to provide meaning and challenge to the local church. It must be told once more in a manner that is culturally intelligible and situational relevant.

This course aims to present a general overview of the history of the Catholic Church from its beginnings in the gospel accounts of Jesus of Nazareth to the present day. Spanning 2000 years and every continent, impacting not just religion but also culture, the arts, philosophy, and global politics, the history of the Christian church is an essential thing to grasp for those seeking to understand the origins of the social forces that shape our world today. This course also presents the major historical moments, figures, events, conflicts, and thought patterns that have comprised the history of Christianity throughout the centuries in both the East and the West.

COURSE OUTLINE:
The course will cover the history of Christianity from its inception to the present day. The course will focus on the six ages of the Church as modelled by Charles Dawson. The topics will be interspersed with ecclesiology considering the six models of the Church by Avery Dulles. The foci of the course are the major movements, doctrines, persons, and institutions that arose within the church and affected its development.
